Transylvanian Unitarian Prayers Dean C. Fisher
|
|
During the 2002 AUC annual meeting we were asked for examples of prayers
that can be used for personal reflection and daily devotions. In this
and upcoming issues of The American Unitarian we will endeavor to offer
examples of devotional prayers from the American Unitarian and other
traditions for your use. I recently came across the following prayers that are used as centering
prayers by the Unitarians in Transylvania. They might be quite useful as
devotional prayers, possibly bracketing other devotional practices. Upon entering the church, this prayer is said silently at the pew before
sitting, with hands folded on the pew back: I have entered your house of worship, oh gracious God My prayers are seeking you, and I hear your voice. Loving God, be with me. Show me
your holy face. Fill my heart and my spirit. Let
me feel your loving presence. Before departing from the pew at the end of the service: I depart with joy in my heart, filled with peace and stillness. My soul has found rest here, because you have been with me. Guide me, protect me, help me always, oh loving God. (Translated by Dr. Judit Gellard, March, 1999) |
