I think that what we may be missing in this discussion is consideration of Unitarianism as a Cultural Tradition as much as a Religion.

Some of the qualities that I, personally, associate with the Unitarian Tradition are a close association with the founding ideals of the American Republic, rigorous intellectual honesty, a persistent chord of "Low Living and High Thinking", a certain degree of association with American Scholarship and Higher Education, a devotion to individual freedom, reflected early on as opposition to Slavery as well as its widespread support of Feminism and an association with the world of Nature, particularly in its manifestation in America's New England.

For me, these associations go a long way towards creating the sort of emotional ties to Unitarianism that a mere dry statement of principles fails to create.

It is like adding illustrations to a book...or paint to a canvas...how is that for bad analogy!
