"Where belief in the One is celebrated"

"Where God is One"

Official slogan:
"Unitarian - Believe in the "One."
When John Dietrich debated William Laurence Sullivan on the God question (as related to Unitarianism) in the 1920s, Sullivan believed Unitarianism needed a creed which would at leat assert a belief in God. Rev. George Dodson thought that Unitarianism would die if it tolerated the atheism of Dietrich. Dietrich stated, "Theism must be given up, the thought of God will have to go, and the future belongs to non-theistic humanism.

As we know, in his latter years, Dietrich became one of us (a believer). Sullivan passed on in 1935. If he'd lived a couple of decades longer, I believe that he and Dietrich would have become fast friends. It would be wonderful if more non-theistic UUs would take a look at Dietrich's religious perspective after 1950.
