Good morning from North Carolina!

I am a woman in my mid-thirties living in Central NC with my husband and our cat. Currently, I am a member of a local Disciples church that I appreciate, as well as being a member of an ecumenical religious order. But to be completely honest, I know that the church I'm in isn't a 100% perfect fit.

I have a very long faith story, but I think my first question is whether the AUC is still pretty functional at the current time. I read the information available online through the San Diego congregation, and was stunned by how dead-on it is to my own religious ideas and faith. It looks like there were quite a few other folks interested in starting congregations, or at least fellowships... are these still in progress? :)

Anyway, thank you for this wonderful information!

Slaves to our culture/traditions

Part of the problem is that we have all acted as slaves to our culture. As more and more cultures interact, we have clashes of terms and beliefs. We are all aware of the problems but feel helpless to initiate needed changes. Our understanding of the nature of God grows, but we are often enslaved by outmoded ways and traditions.

The One or the nature of God does not change regardless of the names and terms we use. To an outside observer, we as a culture will look as if we a playing a religious or spiritual game with our new found knowledge. We like to put nice little labels on everything. We adopt the use of foreign names and chants, even though we do not understand the meanings. We copy others while we hold fast to conflicting thoughts and ways. This is a spiritual game. Is it any wonder that no progress seems to be made by individuals and religious groups?

What we should be doing is much more difficult to achieve. We should be internalizing what we believe to be true, living in accord with that belief, and be putting those teachings into our own words, words that we can understand, molding the best of the teachings together, and then sharing those beliefs and observations with others in an understandable way. In this way we can all grow within or without our traditions while recognizing that others have the same freedom and ability. We can come together when we truly recognize that we are all worshiping the One in our multitude of ways.

Till we can do this we will remain like slaves to our cultures and traditions.

With love,

All life seems to be connected as if it is all part of a great spider web or net.
Be most careful for all that is done affects all others.

Put away your weapons and your fury.
All that you set in motion returns to you.

Put forth your words and thoughts with love.
The Spirit you put in motion will return to you.

Never be deceived into thinking thoughts or words do no harm.
The Spirit sent forth will return to you, your reward.

Near or far all life is connected as if in a web.
Evil or foolish acts bring back trouble to all.

Rise up and commit your loving service to the One and mankind.
Send out vibrations of love for they will be felt by all.

Work to overcome mischief and trouble by sending forth love.
Love mysteriously has the power to keep away harm.

Rise up and drive away negative thoughts from your heart and mind.
Make manifest the love you feel to all, near and far.

Treat all you meet as kin and not as strangers or demons.
You cannot be destroyed or harmed when love of the One protects you.

The One God knows well the hearts and minds of men and women.
For this reason, He has protected us with the mighty power of love.

All fair days and magnificent treasures come with love.
Strive to do good each day, for each thought and deed has its reward.

The One God is a liberal giver and rewarder.
He returns to you the bounty of your love.

Strive to please the One with your life and invite Him into your dwelling.
Your thoughts, words, and deeds will multiply in their rewards.

Praise the One for His gracious favor and for answers to your prayers.
Be to Him as a loving Child, and you will have your reward.

May we always have good and noble thoughts.
Love vibrates with all life and overcomes many grievous things.

Here you have free choice in what you think, say, or do.
Here you may receive the reward for each vibration you send forth upon the Web of life.

You may choose to love and honor the One.
You may choose to receive contentment and joy.

If you wish to receive an abundance of good; send forth good vibrations.
If you wish to receive the love, guidance, and care of the One; send forth to all your love.

If you wish to have many friends; send forth friendly thoughts and words.
If you desire protection, love, and joy; send forth vibrations of love as a worthy Child.

Through words and deeds recognize the kinship of the One and all mankind.
The vibrations of the evil and misguided are all overcome by the power of love given to us by the One.

Mark these words of ours and be a worthy kin to all.
Be exceedingly wise for the One will be your Father and Friend.

Know that the One never slumbers.
Know that the One would be the Father and Friend of all.

Know that the One has given to all great freedom.
Know that all may choose to receive His protection and care.

Be a Guardian of your thoughts, words, and deeds.
The One will let your rewards become manifest, whatever they may be.

Be pious and do no mischief in thought, word, or deed.
No harm may come to you if you always send forth vibrations of love.

The way to draw good fortune into your life should now be apparent to all.
Send forth vibrations of good fortune, wealth, and health to others and these vibrations will return to you.

Whatever you wish for others will return to you.
Be ever truthful and loving for these are great powers.

The One is with and protects each worthy Child.
Serve Him and mankind with love and you will receive great favor.

Strive to be loving and to do good at all times.
The vibrations sent forth will bring immeasurable benefit to you and to all of mankind.

I am Myron Mason, a pleasure to meet you all. I must say that I have been a Unitarian for sometime now and want to say how happy I am to meet others that share my Unitarian beliefs. But from what I have heard from some people is that I will not fit in the AUC as they say I am too progressive/liberal and open-minded for the AUC which they say is a very conservative theology. I disagree with them as Unitarians in contrast to non trinitarians are very open minded, at least the ones I have met are. What do you all say? Is the AUC truly conservative?

I have a dream:
To unite the Unitarians of the World,
To form a dynamic living community,
A Unitarian Community that promotes love, harmony, and peace.

Unitarians live isolated and alone.
Many have to hide what they truly believe.
Few have places where they can openly worship.

Each must find a tolerable place.
Gone are the churches of open worship and love.
Gone are the home fellowships and centers of learning.

Each denomination and religion has Unitarians in their midst.
Many Christians, Jews, Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, and Pagans are truly Unitarian.
Unitarians have used the dominant teachings in their region.

In every culture I have found Unitarian teachings.
One Supreme God or being is over the multitude of gods established by man.
Each has their own name for the Supreme “I am”.

Many different and unique ways of worship are seen.
The common factor is love of the One God and love and service for the good of all humanity.
It would be nice if we could all learn and grow together.

Many religious organizations want to stop the Unitarians.
Driven from the churches many are now spiritual but not religious.
Still some hold to the labels established within their family and culture.

Rebels and heretics find much opposition as they question authority.
Seeking answers to life situations is a grueling task.
No longer are people willing to blindly follow a questionable teaching.

Unitarians now come from all cultures and ways.
Fragmented, many small groups have been formed.
Each struggles, duplicating efforts that have been done by others.

A Unitarian community could coordinate the efforts of all the small groups.
An efficient way to share information and teachings could be established.
An open dialog and exchange of knowledge and wisdom would result.

In the U.S. alone there were over 500 home fellowships.
Many churches and schools promoted a Unitarian Community.
They all have disappeared as the leadership faltered in its commitment to loving God.

I am an ordinary man, but I share with you this dream.
It is possible for all to work together to reestablish a Unitarian Community.
It is possible for all to worship and love God in our different but harmonious ways.

It is possible to promote love, harmony, and peace.
It is possible to have fellowship with others of similar beliefs.
It is possible to learn and grow together as a loving family.

Yes -- Unitarians from all over the world can unite.
We can be a united partnership and community.
We can work together for the good of all humanity.

I hope you share in this dream with me.

With love,

Rev Dorris

This is part of an e-mail that I received this morning. I feel it is important so I am passing it on to you.

Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost, just a lot of reward. Make sure you pray, and pray believing God will answer.

May today be all you need it to be. May the peace of God and the freshness of the Holy Spirit rest in your thoughts, rule in your dreams tonight, and conquer all your fears. May God manifest himself today in ways you have never experienced. May your joys be fulfilled, your dreams be closer, and your prayers be answered. I pray that faith enters a new height for you; I pray that your territory is enlarged. I pray for peace, healing, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, true and undying love for God.

I took the "What kind of Christian are you" Quiz....not being a "Christian" in the traditional sense....the results were interesting:

AAHHHHHH!! Wrong.....

"Hillary Rodham Clinton Christian
(a.k.a. "Left-Leaning Traditionalist")
You think the Bible is divinely inspired, and you say Jesus was the Son of God (but secretly aren't so sure). You go to church when you can squeeze it in between soccer games, brunch, and the "Sam and Cokie" show. You admire Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day, Bill Moyers, and the Dalai Lama; and have read Kathleen Norris' "Cloister Walk" and "Conversations With God." You watch "Touched by an Angel," dab away your tears, then analyze your emotions. You eat boneless chicken breasts, organic produce, and designer ice cream. You talk a lot about the value of community but can't quite remember the name of the guy two houses down. You ardently support gay rights even though you don't really want to think about what those people do. You believe the surrounding culture is polluted and blame it on big corporations. You give to charity but are more likely to help the Sierra Club than your church. The power of Christianity for you is the sense of community and the emphasis on love, forgiveness, and helping the less-fortunate.

"Hillary Clinton".....no way....much of the above is wrong...but a few of the books mentioned may be of interest.

Any thoughts out there on the recent hullabaloo over Barrack Obama's minister? Talk about politics from the pulpit!

After having released a written statement on the matter, Obama himself appeared on one of the Fox News shows tonight to address the issue. Was it me or did he have a panicky look in his eye?

How sad it would be if the Obama campaign were to be dealt a punishing blow by something Obama didn't even do? The cable news and talk radio are hammering Obama because he's been a member of this church for 20 years and, I guess, in their view, he should have quit the church bc. the minister has such out of the main stream political views and he obviously has expressed those views from the pulpit. And now, Obama is having to defend himself for what his preacher preaches. How tough is that to have to do?

The problem for the Obama campaign is that most Americans can't stomach what they see from that pulpit. And now it'll be Obama who has to pay the price.
